MAKE THE IDEA YOURS

A little planning goes a long way.

A simple area worksheet and a real-life checklist to use before you buy.

Start with the space you have.

Enter the internal dimensions of a rectangular room and one rectangular furniture footprint. This worksheet compares areas; it does not determine whether furniture fits, how doors open, or whether routes meet your needs.

Measure the outermost edges. For irregular rooms, work in separate rectangles on paper instead.

Enter your measurements and calculate to see the area comparison.

TEST THE ORDINARY DAY

Before the commitment.

  1. Record what cannot move. Draw doors, window swings, radiators, sockets, vents, columns and fitted storage. Include projections and skirting boards.
  2. Measure the complete item. Use external dimensions, including handles and overhangs. Check packaging and delivery access separately.
  3. Mock up the occupied space. Mark the footprint with removable floor tape suited to the finish. Add the space needed to pull a chair out, open a drawer or stand up.
  4. Test two people at once. Walk past while somebody uses the furniture. Try the route with the actual mobility aid, laundry basket or daily load where relevant.
  5. Test light and reflections. Look from a seated position in daylight and under the intended lamps. A floor plan alone will not reveal glare.
  6. Choose the first reversible change. Move an existing item or test a material sample before placing a custom order. Keep dimensions and return terms together.

Area alone never establishes a usable layout. This tool does not check local building rules, emergency access, accessibility compliance or construction suitability. Use an assessed plan and qualified advice for regulated alterations.
